Dele Farotimi arraigned for alleged defamation against Afe Babalola

Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights lawyer and activist, has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, over allegations of defaming renowned legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN.

Farotimi was reportedly arrested in Lagos on Tuesday by officers of the Ekiti State Police Command. He was transported to Ado-Ekiti and appeared in court on Wednesday at approximately 10:25 a.m.

Farotimi is facing a 16-count charge related to the alleged defamation. The accusations stem from claims that his recently published book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, contains statements that malign and defame the character of Afe Babalola.

Details of the specific defamatory statements were not disclosed at the time of reporting. However, the case has drawn public attention, with observers closely following the legal proceedings.

Farotimi’s legal team is expected to respond to the charges as the trial unfolds, and the court will determine the merits of the case.
