Judge’s absence stalls hearing of Nnamdi Kanu’s N50bn suit against Nigerian govt
The absence of Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, stalled the hearing of a N50 billion suit filed by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, against the Federal Government.
The hearing of the matter which was fixed for Monday was adjourned till February 11, 2025, because Justice Ekwo was on official engagement.
The judge was said to be sitting in another division of the court.
Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor had in one of the proceedings, told Justice Ekwo that he had filed a notice for a change of counsel.
Ejimakor said he was taking over the case from Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) who filed the suit on April 7, 2022.
Kanu sued the federal government over the alleged violation of his rights.
The IPOB leader alleged that he was kidnapped from Kenya and brought back to Nigeria to stand trial.
He urged the court to determine whether the way and manner in which he was abducted in Kenya and brought to Nigeria is consistent with extant laws.
Kanu also asked the court to determine whether by the operation of Section 15 of the Extradition Act Cap E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, he can be competently/legally tried on terrorism and treason charges.
The federal government and Attorney-General of the Federation were listed as defendants in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/462/2022.
